What to expect from the course

Clear and engaging visualisations of data and information are an excellent way to make science accessible to a wider audience. The “Visualising Science” format teaches basic design principles and methods that can be used to present research results in an appealing, understandable and lively way – be it through infographics, illustrations or even comics. The focus of the training is on communication with target groups beyond the peer group.

  • Properties and effects of good visualisation
  • Finding your own theme and developing ideas for it
  • Structure and design of an infographic
  • Basic knowledge of visual design
  • Roadmap from the sketch to the finished visualisation
  • Tools, tips and tricks for creating infographics

Learning Framework

  • Objectives: To understand the principles of visual design. Planning and concept of a visualisation understandable for laypeople
  • Target group: PhD students, postdocs, principle investigators, professors, research assistants and employees of communication departments

Visualising Science: available formats

Our workshops and courses are available in various formats, tailored to individual learning needs. Whether face-to-face, virtual or as a digital self-study course – each format specifically promotes the development of skills in science communication.

In-person Workshop

Direct exchange and practical application: our face-to-face workshops offer a focused learning environment with a real break away from the daily work routine. The focus here is on direct exchange with trainers and the group. Interactive exercises and practical methods make the content tangible and firmly anchored. The intensive learning experience leaves a lasting impression. Our workshops take place either at your institution or in the NaWik course room.

Online Training

Location-independent learning in the virtual course room: our online training courses bring participants together online at fixed seminar times. The units – two or three half days – can be easily integrated into everyday working life. Each training session is accompanied live by two trainers and takes place in small groups to enable intensive exchange and individual feedback.

Science Communication in Grant Proposals

Science communication strategies have become an integral part of grant proposals. This course helps participants effectively incorporate science communication into their funding applications and successfully implement the communication projects outlined in their proposals.
